Sugar vs Beat It

Is Maroon 5’s “Sugar” A Little Too Close To Michael Jackson’s “Beat It?” A Mashup Makes The Case.

Nashville-based producer-singer Ben Schuller regularly wows his nearly 23,000 YouTube fans with impressive covers of popular tunes, like Adele’s “Hello” and The Weeknd’s “Can't Feel My Face.” One of his most impressive vocal feats to date was his mashup of Maroon 5’s “Sugar” with Michael Jackson’s “Beat It,” which he posted on YouTube in January. Do these songs sound eerily similar to you? You’re not alone, and others have made the case that the two songs are remarkably similar in structure. (Hit Songs Deconstructed does a quick but complete influence analysis here). But Schuller’s well-produced mashup lays out the songs (not the original performances) in a nice parallel way so you can decide for yourself. What do you think: Unintentional homage, artistic thievery, or something in between?
